About Redemption Ministries

Why we do what we do

We’re not a brand or an institution. We’re a small team who have spent decades helping people know Jesus as he really is, and we’d love to help you too.

“Our passion is to help people know Jesus the Messiah through the truth of Scripture and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.”

What if our understanding of reality was all wrong?

Reality is multifaceted. The vibrant physical world that never fails to surprise and delight us, and the glorious, mysterious invisible world that we know surrounds us, were both created by God and are held together by him moment by moment. He is the ultimate reality, and if we ignore that, we will walk out of step with what really is.

Ignoring God is a bit like ignoring gravity. You can do it, but the consequences won’t lead to an abundant life.

What is Redemption Ministries for?

Experience tells us that many Christians, whilst having a deep love for Jesus, struggle to understand the Bible and to experience his presence in their daily lives.

This ministry aims to help people see reality as it truly is through the lens of Scripture, discover their place in God’s magnificent story, and live faithful, Spirit-empowered lives as they journey toward the new creation.

Read our purpose

Free, and for everyone

The Gospel is free, and so is everything we teach. You will never be asked to pay for a sermon, earn God’s favour by keeping our rules, or hand control of your life over to us.

Jesus sets people free; he doesn’t put them under a new set of chains. Sadly, many people have been hurt by churches that used guilt and rules to control them, or treated them as a source of income. If that’s your story, you’re welcome here, and you won’t be treated that way.

Giving to our work in Uganda is always a choice, never a condition. God’s grace can’t be bought, and no church or teacher has the right to sell it.

Our story, since 1984

42 years of reaching the nations

Mark and Sandra Neale began this work in 1984 and gave it a name in 1991: Chrisma Ministries, after the Greek word John uses when he writes “you have an anointing from the Holy One”. They travelled internationally, with the same line on all their materials: “bringing the reality of Jesus Christ by the Word of God and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.”

In 1999, the first Redemption congregation was planted, and in 2001 the Redemption Academy was born: a school for boys and girls from preschool to age eighteen. Mark and Sandra no longer pastor or lead schools, but the ministry continues.

The original mandate still stands. We changed the name to Redemption to mark the beginning of something new. Jesus is the Redeemer, and those who believe are God’s redeemed people. We were slaves to sin and death, but through Jesus, God has given us the greater Exodus into the life of his Spirit and the new creation. Our passion is for children to be discipled in this reality and for adults to embrace its wonder and glory.

Redemption DNA

Three scriptures have shaped this ministry from the start.

Philippians 3:10

“I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.” (Philippians 3:10–11, NIVUK)

After everything he had seen, the Apostle Paul was still driven by a hunger to know Jesus more, whether in the power of his resurrection or in sharing his sufferings.

The more we grow to know Jesus as he really is, the more confident we become when we face suffering, difficulty and persecution. The power of the Holy Spirit is not an escape from hardship, but he gives us the grace to handle it. And the more we know him, the more aware we become of his power in us.

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIVUK)

Our senses are continually bombarded, through education, entertainment and the values of the world around us, with a false picture of reality. But when the Holy Spirit transforms us and we understand from Scripture what reality really looks like, we start to recognise that we are surrounded by God’s handiwork, and are an example of it. Even more exciting, this strange season between the resurrection of Jesus and his final return is leading up to the physical renewal of all things, including us.

1 John 2:20, 27

“As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.” (1 John 2:27, NIVUK)

This verse can be confusing, but it becomes clearer in context. John is telling his readers that when someone comes teaching another Jesus, or a new secret or hidden wonder, the anointing of the Holy Spirit in them will tell them it is false.

The Greek word for anointing shares its root with Messiah, from which we get our word Christ. So when we bow the knee and follow Jesus, you could say we have been “messiah-ed”. The Holy Spirit guides us and illuminates the Scriptures as he equips us to bear lasting fruit.

What we believe

Redemption Ministries wholeheartedly affirms the Evangelical Alliance’s Basis of Faith. It captures the historic, orthodox Christian beliefs confessed by the Church throughout the centuries, and it is the foundation for all our teaching, mission and ministry. These are the things we can all sit around the table and celebrate together, whilst we discuss the things we might disagree on.
